December – 1970′s Update

Tolka Millwork completes a wide range of renovation work throughout Greater Vancouver, from heritage to contemporary design. The house was built in the early 1970′s, with the original kitchen to match.  The style of the day was built-in cabinets on-site, drywall valences above cabinets, linoleum on the floors and kitchens designed to be hemmed in by small closing doors.

Forty plus years later Tolka Millwork, working with an independent professional designer and contractor, took on the project of updating the kitchen and family room.  With concept ideas from the client and designer, Tolka Millwork set the design in place for the precise millwork design in both the kitchen and family room.

Some of the challenges and features involved in this kitchen renovation:
   a)  Bearing wall removed to open kitchen into the existing family room.
   b)  In place of bearing wall, a peninsula was placed, separating the kitchen and family area.
   c)  Designed for easy access and expanded space for chef to work. There are many custom
cabinet features in this project – from extra spice storage, to a lazy susan that really
        works!
    d) Cabinets with shaker doors and panels in a natural western maple wood  finish.
    e) Traditional style cabinets are built to the ceiling, with  matching crown moulding  to the
remainder of the kitchen and family room areas.
   f)  All flooring was updated with prefinished oak flooring to match existing flooring.
   g) The entertainment centre was designed around the crystal/glass collection of the clients,
and an upgraded TV/entertaining area.  Note the unique “coast-lining” design of this
millwork in both the upper and lower cabinets, which display the different horizontal and
        vertical elevation lines.
   h) Tri-lighting system of hanging, recessed and accent fixtures utilized. Custom lighting was
used here to hi-light each glass display shelf  in the entertainment centre.
